On mods, I was doing some math and thinking “damn, I wish I had another $5k in the bank”. Here’s my list from my last 2 cars.
Fiesta ST:
Cobb Accessport -$400
Cobb Rear Motor Mount - $155
Cobb Catback Exhaust - $745
Sparco Tarmac Wheels - $596
CP-E Intake -$395
Mountune RS-R Brake Upgrade Kit - $333
Total - $2,624
Mustang:
Ford Performance Power Pack -$520
Whiteline Grip Stage 1 Suspension - $620
Tomei Expreme Ti Exhaust - $900
Total - $2040
Grand total - $4,664 all on things that were not absolutely necessary. I need to chill out and enjoy my cars as they are.

The key is to only upgrade parts when they need replacing. Like if you have a fresh car there’s no need to put on sport springs or coils but if everything’s all worn to shit it makes sense to go buy that performance suspension kit

C&D reported 0.95g on the skidpad for my car and on the track I saw up to 1.13g in the corners but I still felt the need to upgrade the suspension..

You're absolutely right. I got the FiST new when I was 19 and balling out as an E-2 in the Air Force and just wanted to keep modding whatever the forums suggested. The Mustang was too quiet and needed more power, the suspension is silly and I regret that.

Fiesta ST
Parts: $6971.32

Doesn’t include wear items/maintenance or the new lighter rims.
Truck:
Aside from filters, spark plugs and other misc maintenance items, not much. Much of the work was done and paid back between 2005-2008 ( see truck story ).

Not that anything has been too difficult but I've done all the labor myself except the Mustang's power pack (warranty). The labor cost is insane man.

If I had to guess.... I’m somewhere around the $10k mark on my Camaro, probably more . No mods besides mud flaps on the Saabaru - yet.

Given the amount of autocrossing I do/have done I’m firmly of the opinion that everyone should focus on being a better driver before worrying about performance modifications to their car.
I saw this first hand with one of our novice autocrossers last year. He had an SN95 Mustang, heavily modified. Came to me one event asking what modifications he should do next to make it better. “I just can’t seem to get any faster no matter what I do, so what should I do next? Better springs? A tune?”. I offered to ride with him and see what he was talking about.
The guy was just slow. He wasn’t being aggressive, was steering too late, and just wasn’t driving quickly or particularly well. I gave him some advice and he went out the next run and saved 6 seconds. He was ready to throw hundreds of dollars of parts into the car when all it took was a 90 second lesson to improve.
As such, my current car has had basically no modifications unless we’re going to include upgraded tires/wheels. I have the following parts added:
MBRP Street c atback, stainless version. $610 delivered, $130 install labor
Stranoparts rear swaybar, $215 shipped, installed myself
That’s all. Less than $1000 in modifications. Tires and wheels, well, my 2nd set of wheels was around $525, the tires were $1200.

Accessport: $5 00 from Stratified with their tunes.
CPe rear motor mount: $170
FSwerks shift plate: $85
Cat back straight pipe: $140(Sounds like an MRT or MBRP for less than half the price)
Green Filter: $40
Whoosh Motorsports Direct Fit Intercooler: $332.
A bit.

I traded a 95 automatic 1.5l civic with a cracked transmission, partially stripped interior, and sketchy suspension for the Sc. The sale price was $1400 so the Lexus was valued at around $1200 when I got it. If we include the purchase of the parts car(manual swap, coilovers with a motor and choice replacement parts attached) we can add $2200.
Grand total is probably around $11-12k for all repairs, mods, parts car, replacement parts, spread out over a few years.
It’s more than I was expecting once adding it all together but many things are like that over the course of years. And I’ve learned so much during that time fixing things and pieci ng the car together. I don’t think you can put a price on the learning and memories, so I say money well spent.

Ultimately many fiddle with their cars to make it fu nner to drive , or for the reward/ challenge of doing it, not necessarily pure function.

oh yeah, definitely money well spent..... i have a bad habit of coming up with real good projects.. i gather up all my parts that i want to use in it, while i am hunting the body that i want(at a price that i want). FUNNY THING though, is that i will end up having rounded up $11k in engine, $3k in trans and driveline, and another $2k in tires and wheels, ALL SO that i can find a $300 beater, to dump my project parts in. what is almost as bad, is when the insurance company only sees a $500 car when you are done with it.
GOOD THING this latest car is a deathtrap, and that i wont have to be around to see the insurance aftermath..... just so much satisfaction in driving something that YOU built, hard to put into words......

Yeah, the most I could get for my car is $ 2000.
I feel like I’m missing something when I’m in my daily and i see an enthusiast. And like your saying, there’s a satisfaction in driving around in your own creation even if its a pos. ( from anyone else’s persective)

right, it might be a pos, BUT....... EYE did this. and it is even more glorious, when it is quick, and fast, and can handle a corner, and it sounds good, and it sits JUST so on the wheels and tires........ even though it isnt worth much, I did this...... so much more satisfying than spending money for an already built car...... so nice to be able to know EXACTLY what you have in a car, parts wise, and knowing that they were put together correctly. how it goes together...... no replacement for that feeling of pride......

Just added it up, not a healthy amount. But, that is why I drive cheaper cars and mod them to death.
